A Quick Q&A with a Stroller Strides Member: Part 1
Stroller Strides is one of those programs that makes people say, “It totally changed my life!” It’s more than a fitness group; it’s a community of moms, and sometimes dads, who work, play and love hard. These women encourage and support each-other through all of the ups and downs of motherhood, and basically life in general.
With all Stroller Strides has to offer, we decided to find out what the members had to say about their own experiences. Personally, I can’t say enough positive things about this program and I’m not the only one!
Linny Pettit Unzicker is a member of Stroller Strides of Greater Denver at the Littleton location. She is also the co-playgroup captain, planning fun activities for the kiddos to participate in. Here is what she has to say about her experience with Stroller Strides.
1. How long have you been a part of Stroller Strides?
Linny: I was with Stroller Strides La Mesa (CA) for 3 months before moving to Colorado. I've been with the Littleton group for 5 months.
2. How many kids do you have?
Linny: One boy, 14 months, named Wayne.
3. Why did you join Stroller Strides?
Linny: I needed to find other mothers with kids Wayne's age and build a network that was supportive and healthy.
4. What keeps you coming back to Stroller Strides?
Linny: I need time with other people who understand what I am going through and I need to make sure I am keeping my body in shape to keep up with Wayne. I have relied on Stroller Strides to get me out of the house and meeting people since the move, which has been a life saver!
5. What is your favorite thing about Fit4Mom or Stroller Strides?
Linny: It is such a supportive atmosphere. I am not as fit or athletic as some of the other moms but I know that I won't be judged when I modify the workout to best fit me needs and it always feels good when other moms noticed your improvement and encourage you to keep going.
6. Describe what Fit4Mom or Stroller Strides means to you?
Linny: This is my social outlet and my support group at this point. It gets me talking to other adults about topics that are relevant to my day-to-day routines and makes me feel good about myself.
7. While a member what is one goal that you have achieved that you are most proud of?
Linny: I didn't come in with specific goals. I wanted to establish a healthy routine for myself, which I believe I have achieved, and I wanted to make my body stronger.
8. How did you hear about Stroller Strides?
9. Would you recommend Stroller Strides to a friend? If so, what would you tell her about your experience and what she can expect?
Linny: I've already recommended it to friends! I tell them about the quality of the workout and the positive atmosphere. It's a great way to meet other moms while working on your own personal goals.
10. What impact has Stroller Strides had on your kid/s?
Linny: I see Wayne going up to other children after class and trying to engage with them, which he wouldn't really have the opportunity to do otherwise since I don't have other mom friends just yet and he does not go to a daycare. It has also helped me establish a good schedule with him.
11. Anything else you would like to add?
Linny: Three years ago I had surgery on a herniated disc in my lower spine which was impacting all aspects of my life. I had troubles walking, bending over to pick things up, or even tying my shoes (my husband did that for me, as well as shaved my legs!). I was on painkillers around the clock just to function and would basically wake up, go to work, come home, and go to bed. I stopped eating because of the meds, dropped crazy weight, and lost so much muscle. I honestly thought that I would never get better and that I would not be able to have kids. Surgery provided instant relief and my recovery was way better than expected. Because of all my muscle loss, physical therapy was really important for me. After months of rehabilitation, I was excited to do a 15 second plank. I got stronger and stronger, and had a very uneventful pregnancy with Wayne. My back survived pregnancy, delivery, and the first couple of months caring for a baby. I noticed that I started feeling some stiffness after months of sitting and breastfeeding and realized I needed to do something about it. That's when I found Stroller Strides and decided to give it a try. My back continues to be a concern in the back of my mind every day with everything that I do, but I know I am getting stronger and stronger. Before Christmas, my planks were full minutes long, not just seconds. After everything I had gone through, I just felt like that was the most kickass accomplishment!
